Continuing Education Opportunities


Hospice of Charleston and Troy University are partnering together to deliver educational inservices. Those in the medical community, as well as the community in general, can utilize this partnership. The inservices are designed with information to benefit the individual, as well as enhance the workplace environment.

Contact Hours are issued by the Department of Human Services, Social Work and Rehabilitation, within the College of Health and Human Services, Troy University. Contact Hours typically meet the needs of professionals from a variety of disciplines including social workers, nurses, counselors, and clergy.

Continuing Education Inservices:
  • Hospice 101 – this inservice offers basic information about Hospice care. Topics include Hospice philosophy, eligibility, services, funding, plus other pertinent information about Hospice of Charleston.


  • Hospice 102 – this inservice is designed to educate the medical community about Hospice care. Topics include patient appropriateness, admission criteria, services, levels of care, benefits of Hospice care, and tips to make a referral. This comprehensive look will equip those in the medical community to help patients make an informed decision about Hospice care.


  • Top Ten Ways to Connect with People – learn ten effective ways of connecting with those you encounter in the workplace and in the daily routine of life. These tips will help you as you work with patients, patient families, co-workers and others.


  • Time and Stress Management – very few people have learned to manage their time professionally or personally. This inservice will give you the secrets to effective time management which will lead to more effective stress management.


  • Communication Skills – Communicating effectively is crucial in today’s society. In this inservice you will learn communication techniques that will place you far ahead of others in delivering information, listening to others, and being attuned to all aspects of communication.


  • Compassion Fatigue – for those in healthcare the new word for “burn-out” is compassion fatigue. Learn exactly what compassion fatigue is, who it affects, and how to deal with it. This inservice reiterates the fact that one must take care of self to properly care for others. Those that continually feel as if they are running on empty will benefit from this inservice.


  • True Teamwork – in most professional environments the utilization of teams is essential, specifically in healthcare. Learn the most common types of teams in the healthcare setting, tried and true principles of teamwork, and methods to help build an atmosphere of teamwork in your workplace.


  • Hospice Volunteerism – this inservice is designed to discuss the overall benefits of volunteerism of any kind. We will specifically discuss the four primary areas of service related to hospice volunteerism, the role of the volunteer and the role of the Volunteer Coordinator.


  • Conflict Resolution and Mediation Strategies – You can always count on death, taxes and conflict! This inservice will address conflict resolution strategies specific to healthcare settings. Inciting those who cause conflict is often what occurs, but defusing the individual and the situation can occur when handled effectively.


  • Death – Let’s Talk About “It” – More often than not people are uncomfortable talking about death, especially with children. During this inservice you will learn if it is appropriate to take a child to a funeral, to discuss death with a child, to allow children to visit with a person who is dying and much more. This inservice will help you as a healthcare provider and as a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or friend.


  • Contented Cows - Are the Pastures Really Greener? – Did you know that a large number of healthcare providers are not happy in their profession or in their personal life? How can you be really happy in both? Learn ways to accomplish just that while learning that the pastures are not always greener on the other side.


  • Grief and the Holidays – The most difficult time for those who have lost a loved one seems to be on holidays, specifically Thanksgiving and Christmas. This inservice is designed to let you know that there is no specific way to handle your grief during the holiday season. But there are tips offered that will assist you during this hard time of the year. Learn that it is certainly okay to cry, to laugh, to grieve and to enjoy the season.
